Moncton — The Rotary Club of Moncton wants to improve access to books and increase literacy awareness in our community by launching a Little Free Library® program.
The “Take a Book, Return a Book” concept was launched by Rotarian Todd Bol of Wisconsin in 2010 and has now grown into a global phenomenon with more than 25,000 libraries now registered in over 70 countries.
“One of Rotary’s seven areas of focus in strengthening the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy and to increase adult literacy,” said Chad Peters, President of the Rotary Club of Moncton. “We know we have serious literacy challenges in New Brunswick and believe getting books in the hands of people who want and need them can help.”
The Rotary Club of Moncton is looking to install upwards of 20 units throughout the city in the coming months. Two units are being installed at the YMCA of Greater Moncton, one in the foyer and another near the childcare facility.
Each unit will have an official charter number issued by the Little Free Library® organization and will be included on their global list of libraries.
The project is being funded exclusively by the Rotary Club of Moncton through its charitable wing and is partnering with the Frye Festival who are helping with an initial donation of books and ongoing support for the program’s expansion.
The molded plastic units can be located indoors or outdoors and have been manufactured locally by Malley Industries.
“We are asking individuals or groups that would be interested in ‘hosting’ a unit to contact us,” added Peters. “They can be at a business, community centre, daycare, school. We want people to have as much access as possible.”
